Kristen Stewart's latest film, "On the Road," which premiered Thursday night at the Toronto film festival is a far cry from the actress' wholesome character Bella Swan, from the "Twilight" saga.

Directed by Walter Salles, "On the Road," is an adaptation of Jack Kerouac cult classic novel, which Stewart cites as one of her favorite books. The film recounts the story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), an aspiring New York City writer, who encounters Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), an ex-con, who is married to the promiscuous Marylou, played by Stewart. The trio set off on a thrilling adventure, consisting of crimes, drugs and sex.

Stewart delivered an indelible performance as the whiskey guzzling Marylou. She took drugs, stole, appeared topless and performed oral sex on her co-stars, whom she later bedded, simultaneously.

According to Stewart, she struggled more with the character's emotional frankness than the depravity of the lusty scenes. "She loved so openly - and that's hard," Stewart said, referring to the character as "a bottomless pit."

The Toronto film festival is the starlet's first professional appearance since she became media fodder after photographs of  her brief affair with Rupert Sanders, her "Snow White and the Huntsman" director, was plastered on the front cover of US Weekly magazine.

Dressed in a figure-hugging, floral Zuhair Murad dress, the actress comported herself with much dignity, although, her nerves threatened to crack her stoic disposition, on several occasions.

Festival co-director Bailey told the Press, he wanted the focus to be solely on Stewart's performance rather than her personal affairs.

"The thing we always want to do when something like this happens is to keep the focus on the film," Bailey said. "I think she does great work, and it's really a break-out role for her, so we hope whoever's in the theater that night recognizes that."
