Kimberly McCullough has returned to General Hospital as the beloved Dr. Robin Scorpio and she couldn't be happier.

McCullough explained to On Air With Soaps in an interview that was published Monday why she came back to the ABC soap opera. She originated the role as a child in 1985 and appeared for many years. In 2012, she left and her character was presumed dead.

McCullough explained that GH executive producer Frank Valentini wanted the character of Robin to return just as her on screen husband, Patrick, had fallen in love again. McCullough is also entering her second year of directorial school and will not be quite as busy.

"But the main reason is, since I left the show more than a year ago, I was not ever satisfied with the way it happened," she said.  "Frank knew that I was always wanting, and willing, to come back and do something else that was more respectful of the character, and also because so many of my old colleagues and friends are back on the show now.  I left before they came back."

McCullough signed a contract but is not able to comment on its length. However, she insisted that the story of Robin's return would play out.

"I am really looking forward to it, and at the same time, I have to switch my brain a little bit.  I have been traveling for the last year and shadowing directors, and being on sets, and really enjoying being an observer.  Being an actor is the exact opposite of that.  You have to be an active participant!," she said.
