Elisabetta Canalis recently suffered a miscarriage.

In a message posted to her WhoSay account, Canalis, the ex-girlfriend of George Clooney, revealed that while she was expecting her first child with boyfriend Birian Perri, she is no longer pregnant.

"Unfortunately, life gives you...a reality that you do not expect, and that is very hard to accept, even if you think you are strong enough and prepared," the 35-year-old wrote, according to an English translation by the Daily Mail. "You're never really ready to be told that there is no more beating [heartbeat] and that it had already stopped long ago."

Canalis began dating Perri, an orthopedic surgeon at the end of 2013 following her split from Jackass star Steve-O. Prior her three-month courtship with Steve-O, Canalis had been engaged to both Christian Vieri, a retired Italian football player, and film director Gabriele Muccino. In early 2010, Canalis started a relationship with George Clooney but split after 18 months together. Canalis has also been linked to Reginaldo Ferreira da Silva of Vasco da Gama.

Since her split from Clooney in June 2011, Canalis has remained low-key, aside from a brief stint on Dancing With The Stars (Canalis, who was paired with pro dancer, Val Chmerkovskiy, was eliminated during week two of season 13).

Also in her WhoSay post, Canalis encouraged other women who have been through the same heartbreak to stay strong.

"I just want to say to all those women who are going through it to stay strong because life goes on and it is nobody's fault and nature acts in incomprehensible ways," she said.
