Waterfront gatherings offer numerous opportunities to wear something you love. Whether it’s lake, ocean or river, each occasion (and location) calls for a style that is environmentally fitting. Let’s make it easier to “navigate” the appropriate aqua couture by breaking this down into three categories: the pool, the beach, and the boat. Stick to the basics and then build your own look (based on the setting) from there.

Resort Pool Sophisticate

Bag: Clear tote
Hat: Big and floppy (preferably straw)
Swimsuit: Sexy and stringy
Shoes: Wedge sandals
Makeup: Tropical pedicure, face and body illuminator, natural face
Bling: Big and flashy – remember, you’re not wearing much

Ocean Beach Sporty

Bag: Canvas or backpack
Hat: Straw fedora or visor
Swimsuit: Straps to keep you secure in the waves
Shoes: Flip flops (duh)
Makeup: Tinted moisturizer, gloss and waterproof eyeliner/mascara
Bling: Sailors knot rope bracelet—both stylish and swim safe

Seafaring Boat Preppy

Bag: Navy or black stripes, lots of pockets in case boat space is limited
Hat: Classic tight cap
Swimsuit: One piece halter, match the bag
Shoes: Flat espadrilles
Makeup: Opaque nude lipstick and shimmery gold gloss
Bling: Chain to mimic the anchor links, but no diamonds—they attract sharks.

If you’re not sure of how much or how little to adorn when it comes to exposing skin, wear what makes you feel the most confident. Enjoy the season of the sun, and take a little advice from me, someone who worships water: Don’t just use it to cool you down; use it to control the fire for when it gets too “hot.”
