Fans of the series Vampire Diaries is in for more surprises as season 6 rolls - a trip down memory lane to be more precise. Count this as a spoiler as executive producer Caroline Dries teased that fan favorite couple Delena, Damon and Elena (played by Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev respectively), will have a series of flashback scenes from the pair's "honeymoon period" on the 11th episode titled "Woke Up With A Monster". "When we first got them together at the end of Season 4 and they kissed in front of the fireplace, we then cut to three months later. They experienced a whole chunk of time together that we didn't see - sort of the honeymoon period of a new boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. What we were excited about doing with their relationship and interested in playing around a bit with were those initial stages," quoted by Christian Today from Dries' interview with Alloy Magazine about how Elena deals with her feelings for Damon.

On Somerhalder's part, he teased that he will be playing a much bigger role for the coming series. Aside from acting, he will be directing the last episode of the season. The actor posted in Instagram a photo of the episode's script written by Dries and Brian Young titles "The Downward Spiral" and a note of thanks for those who helped him out in his directorial debut.

But that's not all as the midseason finale will also be incorporating issues everyone deals with, in this case, cancer. The show's writers revealed that Sheriff Liz Forbes was diagnosed with cancer in which Dries explained to Latin Post, "Our show is all about death -- trying to prevent death, avoiding death, and beating death. Then, all of a sudden you get this very human illness and it's like, 'Oh! What do we do now?' Currently there is no obvious cure for the Sheriff's cancer, and that was the whole point of doing this now and having it be a curveball in the middle of the season." In addition to that, they will also be giving characters opinions and decisions regarding the disease particularly on how to cure Liz - with a vampire blood.

The Vampire Diaries returns to television screens on January 22.
