Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is working very hard with Skydance to bring Top Gun 2 to reality.

Lead star Tom Cruise is currently busy with Mission Impossible 5, but the actor had already committed to reprising his iconic role of Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell from the smash 1986 hit film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the producers had tapped The Jungle Book writer, Justin Marks, to helm the script.

Adam Goodman, Paramount head of production is reportedly making Top Gun 2 as his priority. "We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce. All parties are moving ahead," he explained from a report by KPopStarz.

Superstar Tom Cruise also expressed his excitement over the project and if they stumble some blocks, that would be fun to do.

Bruckheimer explained that the movie had been planned for almost 30 years and he believed that they are getting closer and closer to production. He is persistent over the fact that this film had to be developed the soonest.

Though there is no definite director yet as the original director, Tony Scott, passed away in 2012, the team are reportedly in the hunt to replace Scott. There had been rumors that Scott's brother, Ridley Scott had been asked for the job. But with several projects under Ridley's belt, we do not know yet if he will accept the role.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer revealed.
