Project Morpheus, the codename for Sony's virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4, is currently still a prototype and has no confirmed market release date. The project was first announced at last year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) as "the next innovation from PlayStation that will [shape] the future of games." According to the company, Morpheus enables developers to create experiences that deliver a sense of 'presence' - where players feel as though they are physically inside the virtual world of a game.  'Presence' is like a window into another world that heightens the emotions gamers experience as they play. The company's plans for Project Morpheus however goes beyond gaming and includes promised partnerships with NASA and to uses for immersive science.

Back in March 2014, according to Tech Radar, Sony has hinted that Project Morpheus may not be seen reaching the market any time soon. Jim Ryan of PlayStation Europe in an interview with the tech site said: "[Morpheus] is right now purely an R&D project, but is something we're really, really excited about. Immersiveness is one of the key features of the game experience, and with each generation the immersiveness has increased and has become more compelling. That change has been incremental but when you  start moving to virtual reality you make a step change in immersiveness. [But,] There are many things to work through, many challenges, business challenges, technical challenges, much to resolve..."

Moreover, a report from the New York Daily News says that "Sony seems intent on pushing Project Morpheus to the console gamer. That means it will find its way into living rooms and must cater to families and less tech-savvy gamers. And that means a serious uphill battle. It means the technology must be perfected to make a good first impression, and it must be user-friendly."

At the upcoming GDC 2015 event in San Francisco, Sony [via Softpedia] has already confirmed that one of the four sessions that it will be holding for the benefit of the expo attendees is on the topic, "Developing for Project Morpheus: an update from PlayStation" and it is scheduled for March 4. Perhaps by then, there may be some announcement as to when Project Morpheus, which has been in development since 2010, can be expected to finally graduate from its present proto-type stage.
