"Criminal Minds" Season 12 recently introduced a serialized arc featuring fan-favorite character, Spencer Reid. While the fate of his character has yet to be seen in the upcoming episodes of the CBS drama, showrunner Erica Messer teases "heightened" episodes ahead all the way to the finale. "Criminal Minds" Season 12 spoilers reveal that Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) may find himself in danger while he is locked behind bars. Spoilers for episode 17 entitled "In The Dark" hint that Reid will continue to have a hard time adjusting to his life in prison, but the BAU will do whatever it takes to keep him safe, reports Carter Matt.

The publication notes that the latest "Criminal Minds" Season 12 episode showed that Reid was in dire need of help from the team, as he continues to struggle living behind bars. An exclusive clip posted on Extra provided a glimpse into Reid's life in prison wherein Reid asks for information about the BAU's new case to take his mind off of his predicament.

While many fans are wondering whether Reid will be released from prison soon, it looks like this major arc will go on through "Criminal Minds" Season 12 finale. In an interview with TVGuide.com, showrunner Erica Messer teased that Reid's predicament will get more "heightened" in the upcoming episodes.

This means that Reid may either continue to stay in prison beyond "Criminal Minds" Season 12 or the BAU will find a way to get him out. The executive producer added that Reid's mother will be returning and explained that Mr. Scratch's involvement will slowly be unveiled in the upcoming episodes.

"Criminal Minds" Season 12 episode 17 airs on March 22 on CBS.
