"Modern Family" premiered Wednesday night, and as usual it brought the laughs!

Season four kicked off with Jay's 65th birthday, and his desire to celebrate it with "no surprises." Unfortunately that wasn't in the cards for him because as fans have known for weeks...Gloria's pregnant!

Gloria has some time to sit and worry how he'll react to the news of a new baby because Phil, who definitely didn't get Jay's "no surprises" memo, swoops in to cause his usual storm of drama.

Flanked by Jay's buddies Shorty and Miles, Phil tells Jay that they're making his birthday dreams come true (they're not...at all) and throw a pillowcase over his head, kidnapping him for a fishing trip and promising Gloria they'll return him later. The day obviously doesn't go as planned. Jay ends up falling into the water with the pillowcase still on, causing Phil to go into lifeguard mode. "I will punch you to save you!" Phil yells as him and Jay flail in the water. "You're making me do this!" The gang eventually get in the fishing boat where Jay finally dries off, and the talk turns to what Jay will do for the rest of his life now that he's 65-years-old. So what does a 65-year-old man have to look forward to? Planting beans in a garden and golfing 6 days a week (and collecting 40+ golf balls).

While Phil is off with Jay, Claire is at home with the kids, and luckily for her, it's the day after prom! Alex is alive and well, informing her mom that she had a great time and even got to meet a new teacher. And then of course Haley comes along. Claire asks an obviously hungover Haley if she drank, and after asking her mom if they really still have to go over this (they do), she denies having a couple drinks at prom. Dylan, who always seems to be lurking by Haley, pops his head up from the couch and the denial of drinking at prom stretches to a denial of Dylan crashing over (although she does ask if Dylan could move in).

Cam and Mitchell are dealing with their own drama at their house, as they both struggle with the fact that their adoption of a brother for Lily did not go through. Definitely unhappy and trying to hide it, Lily has her own solution..."If I can't have a brother I want a kitten named Larry." The trio go on a journey to get a kitten (before that attempting to donate a gigantic stuffed animal gorilla and elephant and failing), and it turns out adopting a kitten is similar to getting a kid. Lots of paperwork and house visits cause Mitchell and Cam to walk away from the cat adoption, but not before one of the workers catch their stuffed animals strapped to the roof in a compromising situation. The failed cat adoption make Cam and Mitchell realize that maybe they're not okay with the adoption of a baby going through.

As for Gloria, she's dealing with her own baby situation. Telling Manny that he'll have a new baby sister or brother, Manny responds that the news is not coming at a great time for him. Somehow the talk of a new baby gets compared to a wooden salad bowl ("I'm the only one who oils it," Manny tells his mom).

Claire takes the news of Gloria's pregnancy a little better than Manny, telling her first "You're gonna get fat," and then following it up with, "That's great!" Gloria tells her how worried she is to tell Jay, and Claire tries to push her worries away, telling her that she's sure her father will be thrilled with the news.

"I knew he wasn't gonna be thrilled," Claire later says, but Jay's reaction shocks everyone. Informed by Claire that someone has good news and he needs to be nice about it, Jay thinks that she is referring to Cam and Mitchell's news that they're adopting a kitten. "I'll love the heck out of that lil bugger," he tells them to their surprise...and that's when Gloria drops the bomb.

After going on a rant about how she will raise the baby by herself because she's an independent Latino woman, Jay finally responds.

"That's the greatest news I've ever heard," he tells Gloria. "A new start with the woman of my dreams."

So...what happens now? "Modern Family" fans don't have to wait, because the series flashed forward to the end of the summer.  Gloria's very pregnant; Cam, Mitchell and Lily went to London and got a kitten; Dylan moved in with the Dunphy's, and Phil grew a ridiculous beard.
