Selena Gomez hasn't always stood her ground in the entertainment industry.

Although the pop star is confident enough to be herself now, she used to be a victim of Hollywood, giving into the pressures of the industry, which demanded she look and act a certain way.

"I'm surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me, and some of them have and others haven't," Gomez, 21, revealed to the audience at the recent We Day conference in Oakland, Calif. "They pressure me … you gotta be sexy, you gotta be cute, you gotta be nice. You gotta be all these things."

During We Day, Gomez was just one of many celebrities, including Orlando Bloom, Seth Rogen and Magic Johnson, who were tapped to give speeches to empower and inspire young people to take action and affect change.

While Rogen's speech focused on encouraging attendees to put their energies into their individual passions and talents, Gomez spoke all about pressure, and for someone who has been in the entertainment industry since she was 10-years-old, Gomez is certainly knowledgeable on the topic.

"They tell me what to wear, how to look, what I should say, how I should be," she continued, admitting, "Until recently, I had given into that pressure. I lost sight of who I was. I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought that others would accept me for it ... but I've learned from my actions and for all of the things I've done, I'm proudest of that."

Despite the challenges of dealing with the pressures of Hollywood, Gomez is thriving in the industry, appearing in four films in 2013 and filming two, so far, in 2014.
