Robert Downey Jr. has released a statement regarding his son's recent drug arrest.

On Sunday, June 29, Indio Downey was arrested in West Hollywood, Calif. and found to be in possession of cocaine. Days later, Robert has released a statement regarding his son's possible issues with drug addiction.

"Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it," Robert explained to Us Weekly in a June 30 statement. "There is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."

From 1996 until 2001, Robert was arrested a number of times on drug-related charges. Throughout the years, Robert struggled with an addiction to cocaine, heroin and marijuana, which he claimed was the result of a drug addiction he had inherited from his father. Following his last arrest in April 2001, Robert knew he had to get serious about getting clean, and although he had tried rehab in the past, he finally was able to get clean and stay clean later that year.

Of his arrest, Indio told TMZ, "I'm sorry for what happened. I spent a strange time (sic) and I was not myself, thanks for your support and be close to me. I Love You."

Indio was reportedly released from jail late Sunday evening after posting $10,000 bail.
