Maroon 5 has faced serious backlash following the release of their music video for "Animals."

Adam Levine Opens Up About His Struggle With ADHD

The video is sexually explicit and relatively graphic, chronicling a stalker's assault on a woman, who is played by front man Adam Levine's real-life wife, Behati Prinsloo. A sexual assault group, The Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network (RAINN), released an official statement on Wednesday, slamming the band for glamorizing abuse.

"Maroon 5's latest video for 'Animals' is a dangerous depiction of a stalker's fantasy. And no one should ever confuse the criminal act of stalking with romance. The trivialization of these serious crimes, like stalking, should have no place in the entertainment industry," the group's Vice President of Communication, Katherine Hull Fliflet, said, according to a Oct. 2 report by Us Weekly.

The video is pretty gruesome. One scene shows Levine, who plays a "cleaver-wielding butcher's assistant," stowed away in a basement surrounded by animal carcasses and dozens of photos of Prinsloo. In another scene he stands outside of Prinsloo's window, breaks into her apartment after she falls asleep and crawls into bed with her.

What is perhaps the most disturbing scene shows the couple sleeping together while gallons of blood falls down on them.

In addition to the graphic visuals, "Animals" lyrics are a bit frightening.

"Baby, I'm preying on you tonight / Hunt you down eat you alive / Just like animals," one lyric reads. Another says, "Maybe you think that you can hide / I can smell your scent from miles / Just like an animal."

There's still no word from the band, but Prinsloo tweeted, "It's out and its bloody, ready for Halloween @maroon5 @adamlevine #musicvideo."

If you are a victim of stalking and/or assault, RAINN reminds you there are various support outlets available at all times. Survivors can get help through the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOP and at online.rainn.org.
