The Weinstein Company's Regression, a psychological drama thriller, is slated for release to US cinemas on August 28. Written and directed by Alejandro Amenabar, the film stars Emma Watson, Ethan Hawke, Aaron Ashmore, Devon Bostick, and David Thewliss.

The story is set in Minnesota during the 1990s. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigates the case of young Angela Gray (Emma Watson), who accuses her father, John Gray (David Dencik), of sexually abusing her. Arrested, John unexpectedly admits guilt but insists he cannot remember anything. A renowned psychologist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories. What they discover unmasks a horrifying nationwide mystery. Implicating a police officer in the crime, he learns that he may be part of a nationwide conspiracy.

Watson celebrated her 24th birthday working on the film, tweeting fans: "First day shooting Regression today - a very cool birthday present xx." Regarding her involvement with the project, she previously told Digital Spy: "I am passionate about Alejandro and his work and am so happy to be collaborating with him. I'm really excited by the challenge my character presents to me as an actress... I can't wait to begin."

Amenabar is best known for Open Your Eyes which was remade in the US by Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise as Vanilla Sky, as well as for his The Other, a Nicole Kidman starrer horror thriller which grossed over $200 million worldwide.

Amenabar's Regression is being produced by his longtime partner Fernando Bovaira for his company MOD, and by Amenabar's own company, Himenoptero. On what to expect from the upcoming film, Bovaira told Variety: "Alejandro plays in Regression with our deepest primal fears to make us feel once again both profoundly human and extremely vulnerable."

Glen Basner, CEO of FilmNation Entertainment which will market the film in territories outside the U.S. and Spain, added: "This suspenseful and thrilling story, coupled with what we know will be a truly atmospheric setting, is going to be unforgettable for years to come."
