NBC's Chicago Fire Season 3's Episode 12 aired on Tuesday, January 13, titled "Ambush Predator." Directed by Joe Chappelle from a teleplay by Tiller Russell, it follows Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Dawson (Monica Raymund) as they discover startling new evidence found at a storage unit fire that appears connected to the fire that took Shay's (Lauren German) life, seen during the show's premier episode for the season titled "Always."

Severide and Dawson are at the place the fire took place last week. They conclude that an arsonist has been there and it's his lair. Severide asks Dawson to go with him to the scene of Shay's death as he isn't sure about the report about how the fire started. Dawson reluctantly goes with him and they discover that the fire didn't start at the part of the building they thought it did. Investigating further, they conclude that it was a deliberate arsonist attack. Shay was not a victim of an accident, she was murdered.

Meanwhile, the firehouse bands together when they got a report that Chaplain Orlovsky (guest star Gordon Clapp) is the victim of a bad car accident. The firehouse team is called out to respond to a head on collision where they realize that the Chaplain is involved. Both victims are taken to the hospital, but the Chaplain is in a bad way. The hospital has no record of a next of kin for him. Casey (Jesse Spencer) sets out to find whom to tell about his accident. In the end, the Chaplain wakes up and begins to recover.

Still meanwhile, Mills (Charley Barnett) and Brett (Kara Killmer) are called out to a head injury victim, but are shocked when she refuses treatment. It appears her husband is telling her not to accept it. Brett and Mills think this is domestic violence. Later, while dropping off a guy who cut his fingers off, they see the woman again, battered and bruised. Mills attacks the husband and threatens to kill him if he touches the woman again,

Elsewhere, Chief Boden's (Eamonn Walker) father (guest star Richard Roundtree) will visit, but quickly wears out his welcome with his unsolicited parenting advice. Other guest stars for episode 12 include LaRoyce Hawkins, Randy Flagler and Melissa Ponzio.
