Johnny Depp, 51, injured his hand over the weekend while in Australia for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and is returning to the United States for surgery according to The Wrap. Depp was reportedly not on set or filming at the time of the incident, and production is expected to be "minimally impacted" by the franchise star's injury.

Walt Disney Pictures Pirates of the Caribbean 5, the next installment in the fantasy adventure film franchise series inspired by a Walt Disney theme park ride, opens in theaters on July 7, 2017, notwithstanding Depp's hand injury a spokesperson for the studio told The Wrap. Filming for the movie began last month and is expected to wrap this summer as scheduled.

Originally set for a July 2015 showing, the release date had to be moved back to accommodate script rewrites. The Pirates of the Caribbean 5 movie, which has been officially titled Dead Men Tell No Tales, is now being directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg based on a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson along with Stuart Beatie, Ted Elliot, Terry Rosio and Jay Wolpert. Depp himself was also asked by Disney and executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer to collaborate with Nathanson on the development of the now final script.

Depp reprising his Jack Sparrow role stars alongside franchise newcomers Javier Bardem and Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites and Golshifteh Farahani. Returning cast members include Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum.

According to the studio synopsis, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis Captain Salazar escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea... including him. His only hope of survival lies in seeking out a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas, the legendary Trident of Poseidon.
