Instagram today announced they have two new creative tools to offer users - Color and Fade, new photo editing tools to add to the five special filters, Aden, Slumber, Crema, Ludwig and Perpetua, that were released in December.

"Today, we bring you two new creative tools: Color and Fade," said Instagram. "Use the Color tool to tint the highlights or shadows in your photo. You can choose from yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, cyan or green to add a colorful flair to the moments you share. The Fade tool allows you to bring a quiet tone to your photos by softening colors."

As observed by Tech Crunch, "the updates are like the more detail-oriented adjustments Instagram began making available to app users above and beyond its set filters last year, providing more granularity for those looking to add variety to their picture tweaks. Off the shelf filters are still there of course, offering a shortcut to more interesting looking pics, but Color and Fade join perspective adjust, Lux, and other specific shadow, exposure, highlight and tilt shift controls to give you individualist creative freedom, which is a smart way for Instagram to keep things interesting for users gaining more familiarity with photo editing basics while retaining their broad market appeal."

The new filters take advantage of the higher quality images created by today's smartphones while the original filters were there to help enhance the relatively low-quality images produced by those phones back when Instagram launched. These new filters can be used to create a subtle color shift to photographs. Color and Fade icons now appear in the new customizable filter tray that shows a tiny blurred preview of your image to help you quickly find the right color and tone you're after. Just tap on the filter to see how it will look on your photo in full resolution.

Instagram for Android version 6.19.0 is available today on Google Play, and Instagram for iOS version 6.10.0 will be available in a few days in Apple's App Store
