MC Hammer's appearance at the American Music Awards was as unexpected as it was incredibly, ass-kickingly awesome. The 90s sensation, who hasn't been a relevant musical force in over a decade, joined Korean pop sensation Psy for a legit mash-up of "Gangnam Style" and "2 Legit 2 Quit" at the AMAs last night.

Hammer still has the moves and Psy still has the inexplicable charisma that has turned him into an international superstar whose YouTube video now has more than 700 million hits. Hammer told CNN backstage that the opportunity to perform alongside Psy came from Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun.

"Scooter Braun connected us, and [when] I spoke with Psy I knew right away that he is a good guy. I like working with good people ... I loved doing it and we had a great time together," Hammer said, adding "Psy is fantastic. He's shifted the planet. He's got the whole world dancing. And it's a rarity in this world. Only four people made that happen in history - James Brown, Michael Jackson, yours truly and Psy. "

The wardrobe for the routine, which featured the iconic 'hammer pants,' was Psy's idea. The singer admits to being a Hammer fan from way back in the day.

"Honestly, I practiced his move[s] 20 years ago," Psy said. "So I've done that for 20 years."

While the inclusion of MC Hammer may have been lost on some of Psy's younger fans, it's obvious the AMA audience loved their bubblegum pop with a heaping side of nostalgia.
