GoPro was issued a new patent for a "Square Profile" camera on Tuesday. The move has been welcomed with a lot of speculations about the probability of California based company designing a camera to compete with a similar product launched by Polaroid last year. The patent for the cube camera titled "Camera housing for square profiled camera" has been pending since January 2014.

Furthermore, it has been reported by Forbes that this move is all set to diversify the consumer base for Go Pro from the present base of daredevils and thrill seekers. Moreover, it seems that the move is directed towards releasing a cheaper product in the market for the use of casual consumers following the footsteps of popular brands such as Sony, Polaroid and Xiaomi.

Besides, it has also been reported by ValueWalk that Go Pro has been constantly on the rise having shipped 5.18 million cameras in 2014.  The Polaroid Cube launched in 2014 was priced at $99 and has received decent reviews which specifically have praised its simplicity and portability. However, some industry experts seemed to criticize its mounting ability which relied on a magnet and hope for Go Pro to cite improvements on this ground having used innovative mounts to record videos using its cameras which include helmets, surfboards and cars.

The acquisition of the patent is not a clear indication of the realization of the camera. It has been observed in the past that companies have acquired patents but never created those goods. The spokesperson for GoPro also remarked that the above is carried out to ensure protection of the technology and intellectual property of an organization.
