In a recent study conducted by Lund University, researchers have been able to find that Coffee would be able to reduce the risk of breast cancer, that too almost by fifty percent. Coffee contains a hormone known as tamoxifen, which is extremely influential in reducing risk of malignant tumours from recurring in woman who are recuperating from the ailment.

Ann Rosendahl, one of the researches part of this study at Lund University observed that people who drank atleast two cups of coffee everyday had much small tumours than those that did not drink coffee.

Even the hormone dependant tumours were found to be very small in number. Though this was observed by them at the diagnosis stage, the research ultimately reinforced their beliefs in the effect that coffee may have on cancer patients. The study was conducted was conducted on 1090 participants suffering from breast cancer

The hormone Tamoxifen attacks cancer cells and prevents its growth by preventing oestrogen, which is considered to be a cause of cancer, from reaching the affected cells. Tamoxifen is administered in the treatment of breast cancer to women who haven't reached menopause yet.

Apart from tamoxifen, the cancer cells also reacts positively with caffeine and caffic acid, both of which are found in abundance in coffee. Caffeine has already showing promising signs in the battle against cancer as it prevents the cancer cells from dividing and also aids in destroying the cells.

However, this study has shown that a combination of tamoxifen and caffeine causes much more damage to the cancer cells and affects their ability to grow, says Ann Rosendahl.

Previously there have been studies conducted to show the effect of coffee on cancers associated with heavy drinkers like Liver Cancer. Even the World Cancer Research Fund advocates that coffee has the potential to reduce risk of developing cancer and also aid in the fight against cancer.
