Screenwriter Michael McCullers promises that 'Shrek 5' will be a reinvention of the franchise that has been around for more than a decade. He gains confidence after his previous work "Boss Baby" achieves a surprising success.

McCullers said in an exclusive interview with Hollywood Reporter that "Shrek 5" is finished its script writing process and currently under development. The 46-year-old screenwriter is renowned for his work with comedian Mike Myers to co-write two Austin Powers movies. Some of his previous works are "Hotel Transylvania" and "Mr. Peabody & Sherman."

"It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal," McCullers said regarding "Shrek 5" movie. He said that the writing the script for the movie is very personal for him. Therefore he decided to reinvent the movie, moreover, he added, "There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved."

"Shrek" was first released in 2001 as the Dreamwork Pictures production. The movie was a huge success in the box-office, grossing total $484.4 million, followed by the second one "Shrek 2" in 2004 with $919.8 million. Subsequently, the revenue from the third and fourth movies slowly declined, with only $799 million and $752.6 million respectively. McCullers is very optimistic that he will be able to reboot the franchise in "Shrek 5."

Unfortunately, the popularity of the green ogre has been declining after four movies. According to The Independent, the most important question for "Shrek 5" is where it will go next without exhaustion. The franchise was so successful in the first two movies, but its last two movies were failed to follow the footstep of the two predecessors.

As a former writer for "Saturday Night Live," McCullers is very good in articulating a comedy into a script. It will be interesting to see how he will reboot the franchise in "Shrek 5." Meanwhile, Eddy Murphy, who voiced the Donkey in the previous four movies tease the movie during the Hollywood Film Awards as can be seen in a footage from Entertainment Tonight below:
