Actress Hair Falling Out: Did Pregnancy Make January Jones' Hair Fall Out?

A "Mad Men" actress' hair is falling out, but it's not from stress, she said.

"I have been every color, and now my hair is falling out in clumps," January Jones told Grazia Daily at the Sundance Film Festival. "I'm going to have to shave it off and wear a wig."

The blonde beauty often compared to Grace Kelly insists the hair-raising problem is due to constant hair dyeing, but there could be another reason.

When women are pregnant their hair tends to get thicker and longer. Higher hormone levels during those nine months prevent regular hair loss. Prenatal vitamins also stimulate hair growth.

After pregnancy, when a woman's hormone levels and vitamin intake recede, hair loss can set in at an alarming rate. New moms often complain about large clumps of hair in the shower drain.

For some women, the hair loss will last for a month or two. For others, it could last for a year or more.

Jones gave birth to her son, Xander, in Sept. 2011. It's been over a year, but according to reports Jones could still be suffering from postpartum hair loss.

"I like [my hair] in all colors, it makes you feel different according to what color it is, but I prefer to be blonde," the actress told Grazia. "My son recognizes me in photos when I am blonde."

Jones surprised fans at the SAG Awards when she sported an edgy Prabal Gurung dress, choppy 'do and dark brows. She has worked hard to not get stereotyped for her good-girl, 1960s image. Instead, she goes in the other direction opting for vampy styles that seem inconsistent with her All-American look.

As far as her family's concerned, they'd be happy to see her with blond hair all the time.

"I didn't get treated differently when I was redheaded, but when I went dark for a few months, I was suddenly invisible," Jones told the magazine. "Not just as a celebrity, but to my friends and family. I was like, 'Come on you guys, it's me!'"
