Dwayne Wade reportedly fathered a baby while he was on a "break" from his fiancée, actress Gabrielle Union, a friend of the couple told Entertainment Tonight.

The report came on the heels of the engagement of the couple. The Miami Heat player announced their engagement on Dec. 21.  Wade and Union began dating in 2009. In September, the basketball star appeared on The Tonight Show and revealed that the couple had a temporarily breakup earlier this year.

"Celebrity relationships [are] very hard," Wade said to host Jay Leno. "This was a big year for us and our relationship from the standpoint of she was shooting her show 'Being Mary Jane,' going most of the year. I was dealing with my injuries, trying to win a championship, so we kinda took a step back."

Before the Miami Heat's game against Denver Nuggets on Monday, Wade acknowledged that he had fathered a son during the temporary split, according to USA Today.

"I'm in the public eye, so obviously that's a part of it," Wade said. "It comes with the territory. But, it's kind of ... as I've always done my whole life ... is always focus on what's most important to me and my family, and that's being a great father. I've always tried to show my importance in my kids' lives and it doesn't change now.

"But, yeah, I had a time ... in our pain and our hurt, (but) a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy. So, I'm moving on."

"[T]his is something that my family knows and my now fiancee worked through when we got back together, and understood that we wanted to continue our lives together and continue supporting our family and we're going to do that."

The NBA champion has two sons namely Zaire and Zion from a previous marriage. He also has custody of a nephew, according to People.

When asked whether he has seen his new baby boy, he said: "I've gotten a chance to see him. You know me. I'm involved in my kids' lives."
