Former NBA player Dennis Rodman has checked into an alcohol rehabilitation center on Wednesday, Jan. 15, after returning from his North Korea trip, Daniel Prince, the basketball star's agent revealed.

According to CNN, Prince revealed that Rodman has been in rehab for most of the week now.

"His drinking escalated to a level that none of us had seen before. When he came back, I discussed with him on a personal level how concerned I was. We sat down and decided for him to go to rehab. It is a 28 or 30 day facility."

He added that Rodman was "beyond exhausted and overwhelmed" after the North Korea trip, TMZ reported.

Rodman was criticized for the things he did when he was in North Korea. In an interview with CNN, the 52-year-old seemed to suggest that Kenneth Bae, an American man jailed in North Korea, might have deserved his imprisonment in the foreign country.

Bae's family complained and Rodman later apologized citing stress and saying that he was under the influence of alcohol during the interview.

After that, many people also criticized him for singing Happy Birthday to Mr. Kim inside a sports stadium.

"What was potentially a historic and monumental event turned into a nightmare for everyone concerned," said Mr Prince to BBC.

"Dennis Rodman came back from North Korea in pretty rough shape emotionally.

"He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful for the anger and hurt his words have caused."

When he arrived at Beijing airport, the basketball star was immediately surrounded by many reporters.

"I'm not the president," he said to the reporters. "I'm not an ambassador. I'm Dennis Rodman."
