Sources believe a black bear ate the body of a deceased California man.

Marion Lee Williams, 65, died of a suspected heart attack last week, when a bear found his body, dragged it away and reportedly ate it in a nearby cave.

"It looks like he collapsed and died. The bear comes along and sees a potential food source," said Roy Horton, the County Deputy Coroner, according to an Oct. 18 report by Yahoo News.

The bear is thought to have come by Williams' body near his trailer in the heavily forested and mountainous Humboldt County. He was last seen on Oct. 8 and apparently lived alone and "off the grid."

Authorities discovered the remains last Monday, and used them to help identify the body. Investigators used Williams' fingerprints, dentures and pieces of clothing for identification.

Officials searched the area for the bear, hoping to trap and kill it, but attempts were called off. It appeared doubtful the bear was still in the Redway area.

"[The] bear does not pose a public threat. It was just doing what bears do," Andrew Hughan, the spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said.

This is the second bear attack in recent news reports. Last month, a black bear killed a 22-year-old Rutgers University student in New Jersey as he was walking with friends in the woods. It was the first fatal bear attack in the state since 1852.

Black bears will usually only attack when provoked, but like any wild animal, they can be unpredictable. If you are traveling in an area known for black bear sightings, be sure to take note of your surroundings and steer clear of the massive mammal.
