Following Divergent's $4.9 million debut take at the box office, the Insurgent movie is set for its March 20, 2015, theatrical showing as originally announced by Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate subsidiary. The two films are of course the adaptations of "Divergent" and "Insurgent," which are the first and second books in the "Divergent" trilogy for the young-adult genre written by Veronica Roth. The third book in the series, "Allegiant," will also be made into a movie. In fact, it will be made into two films, namely, The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part I which will be released on March 18, 2016, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part II which will screen in theaters on March onMarch 24, 2017.

Insurgent continues where Divergent left off - with Tris (Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), Caleb (Ansel Elgort), and Marcus (Ray Stevenson) on their way to Amity where all factions are allowed to settle as long as they stay in peace. Eventually, Erudite and Dauntless forces arrive in search of the wanted Abnegation refugees. During the search, a gunfight erupts wherein Tris saves Peter's (Miles Teller) life. Eventually, Tris, Four, and others manage to escape and board an oncoming train which takes them to another refuge, a factionless safe zone whose people are under the leadership of Evelyn (Naomi Watts), Four's mother who was previously thought to be dead. Tris and Four did not stay long, opting instead to move on to Candor.

In Candor, Tris and Four are arrested and subjected to a truth serum trial. During the trial, Four admits that he joined Dauntless to escape his father's abuse, and Tris admits her guilt in shooting and killing Will. Suddenly, they are attacked by Dauntless traitors led by Eric (Jai Courtney) who shoots them with a more powerful simulation serum which allows Jeanine (Kate Winslet) to exert greater control even over great distance. Following the attack, Candor leader Jack (Daniel Dae Kim) agrees to a meeting with the Erudite, which was secretly observed by Tris and Four. Tris is taken into Erudite headquarters where she is subjected to Jeanine's several simulations, including injecting her with a terror-inducing drug in a ploy to find out the locations of the factionless safe houses. Unable to break Tris, Jeanine sentences her to an execution to be carried out by Peter. In gratitude for having been saved earlier by Tris, Peter lets her and Four escape.

Insurgent was directed by Robert Schwentke following Divergent director Neil Burger previous announcement that he will no longer continue with the series.
