"Sherlock" Season 5 renewal updates are very scarce online and the show's fate is currently on a limbo. BBC has not renewed or cancelled the series since it aired its fourth season in January.

While the fans' response to "Sherlock" Season 4 varies, many remain optimistic that Season 5 would happen. If BBC decides to cancel the show for good, several fans are hoping that another network such as Netflix would pick up the show.

After all, "Sherlock" airs on Netflix and as Fansided reports, the show remains as one of the best crime TV shows on the online streaming service. Many viewers stream episodes of the series through the site, which may partly explain the reason for the drop in the show's ratings for the fourth season.

TV Series Finale reports that even Benedict Cumberbatch has expressed hope to reprise his role on "Sherlock" Season 5. The 40-year-old actor explained that he would "love to keep revisiting it" but his ongoing commitments to other projects is keeping him from reprising his role every year.

Executive producer Steven Moffat also clarified that "Sherlock" Season 5 may still happen as BBC still has not axed the series for good. Martin Freeman, however, seemed pessimistic about the show's fate and said that the fourth season gave off the impression of being the series finale.
