News broke today that after five years Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have filed for divorce. While conspiracy theories surrounded their relationship from the start, their divorce has still come as a shock.

Katie Holmes's attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, released a statement announcing the divorce: "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Following the statement, it was revealed by TMZ that Cruise was "blindsided," and that Holmes filed for sole custody of Suri.

As details on their divorce continue to spill out, let's take a look back on three conspiracy theories that plagued Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes's relationship from the start.

1. Auditions For The Role Of Wife - It's been reported that Cruise held "auditions" for the role of wife and doting mother. Forbes reports that sources inside the Church of Scientology claim that Cruise auditioned multiple young single actresses. The audition list reportedly included Erica Christensen and Scarlet Johansson. Ultimately, Katie Holmes won the role of Tom Cruise's wife.

2. The Contract - When news hit that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were getting married, rumors swirled of a "marriage contract." According to Forbes, the contract gave the actress financial incentives for each mile mark she hit. Anniversaries and the birth of children were among these marks. One rumor was that Holmes was paid $3 million per year she remained married to Cruise. With their five year anniversary arriving this November, it's possible that this divorce coincides with their five year marriage contract.

3. Brainwashing - Back when Katie Holmes became engaged in 2005, there were 16 days where she just went missing. Disappeared. Fell off the grid. Girlfriend couldn't be found anywhere. Fox News has a reported time line of events that lead up to Holmes and Cruise announcing their relationship. The timeline kicks off in April of 2005. Holmes was spotted around New York City up until April 11, when she flew to Los Angeles to have a meeting with Tom Cruise about a role in "Mission Impossible 3." Fox News reports that Holmes was not heard from for 16 days until she finally resurfaced on April 27 -- "when she appeared in public as Cruise's girlfriend and love of his life."
