The Spears Trawick split was a done deal a long time ago, according to sources who know the couple. Word is that Trawick felt like the romance died many months ago. He was just waiting for the right moment to tell his fiancee. But the right moment never came. So he just had to tell Spears.

Britney Spears, 31, and Jason Trawick, 41, got engaged in December 2011, two years after they started dating. And unlike Spears' marriages to Kevin Federline and Jason Allen Alexander, friends and family thought this relationship would last.

Trawick, who managed Spears' career, was viewed as a paternal figure who got Spears' life back on track after her well-documented drinking and partying. "Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into an undisclosed rehab facility today," Larry Rudolph, Spears' former manager, said in a statement in 2007. "We ask that the media respect her privacy as well as those of her family and friends at this time."

Reports circulated on Friday night that the split was Trawick's choice, leaving friends concerned that Spears could fall back to her old partying ways. "The romance is gone," an insider told Us Weekly. Trawick "puts her on speakerphone so friends can hear her nagging." That may be, but Spears is reportedly fragile. And friends don't know how she'll react.

In 2008, Spears was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder and almost lost custody of her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. "The first thing is, there needs to be some sort of evaluation mentally on where she stands," Star Jones said at the time.

It doesn't help that Spears also announced this week that she's quitting "X Factor." Friends say a steady job might have given the singer a positive focus.

"I've made the very difficult decision not to return for another season," Spears announced this week. "I had an incredible time doing the show and I love the other judges and I am so proud of my teens, but it's time for me to get back in the studio. Watching them all do their thing up on that stage every week made me miss performing so much! I can't wait to get back out there and do what I love most."
