Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are fighting to save their marriage, PEOPLE reported in their new issue.

Sources told the celebrity weekly that the estranged couple have not yet given up on their 13-year marriage. It has been four months since they announced their separation. The two actors are still speaking regularly on the phone.

The Oscar winning couple share two children Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10. The kids are expected to stay with their mother in New York for her birthday on Wednesday. It is also Douglas' birthday as well. In previous years, the two celebrated together. Douglas will be in Mexico shooting a movie this year.

At the Emmy's, Douglas was confident about what the future held for him and Zeta-Jones.

"We're working things out, talking," he said, "and we'll see how she goes."

In August, the couple announced that they were taking time away from their relationship. It had been rumored for months that the two were having their difficulties. Sources said that the past three years have dealt a blow to the marriage. During this time, 68-year Douglas battled cancer and his eldest son from a previous marriage was sentenced to jail for dealing drugs. The 48-year-old actress has been open about her bout with bipolar II disorder. Earlier this year, she sought treatment once more for the condition.

"The stress has taken a toll on their marriage," a friend said.
