Nelson Mandela Dead: Former South African President Dies At 95

Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 on Dec. 3, The Huffington Post reported.

Mandela, South Africa's first Black President, had been battling several illnesses for the past few months. The civil rights icon who spent 27 years in prison for anti-apartheid activities died surrounded by his family.  South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed the news to the world on Thursday afternoon.

"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."

Immediately, the tributes began to pour in for the man credited for bringing change to not only South Africa but around the world. President Barack Obama spoke of the influence Mandela not only wielded on him, but the world. Obama said that Mandela now belonged to the ages.

"I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's life," Obama said. "I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example set by Nelson Mandela."

Celebrities also took to social media to offer statements on the passing of the former South African leader. Oprah Winfrey tweeted that it was one of the greatest honors of her life to meet him. Muhammad Ali said that he was amazed by the resiliency that Mandela displayed in his long life.

"Mr. Mandela is considered a chief of his tribe; his family name is Mandiba. But he represents a much larger tribe. He is the chief of the tribe of courage, and decency for all of mankind. There is not a more significant, important, profound world leader of this century," Ali wrote.

Idris Elba, who portrays Mandela in the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, also shared his thoughts.

"What an honor it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family," Elba said.

Mandela is expected to receive a state funeral in South Africa although no official announcement has been made.
