Lorde took to her Tumblr page to reflect back the huge year of 2014 that she has had. The 17-year-old singer wrote her post on New Year's Eve. Here is an excerpt from it:

"This year was lying on my back, in a pool in rome on my lunch break. it was walking through glasgow late, treading the same loop of worn stones, hearing a busker sing royals and being sure i was dreaming. it was stumbling through paris at 5am, too time-twisted to sleep. it was creeping through palais de tokyo, trying not to wake up people in sleeping bags. it was the year of peering through windows into beautiful rooms, and realizing as the year slipped away that i was in that room now, not looking in

She continued, "It was crying alone in hotels while the sun came up. it was the year of people talking trash, a hundred empty compliments. it was the year of genuine love. it was rushing in a car through the mexico dusk to a private plane, to a stage with some heroes on it. it was being rushed through the night in dozens of cars, sometimes lonely, or so, so happy."

Lorde released her debut single "Royals" in 2013 and it became an international crossover hit, peaking atop the US Billboard Hot 100. This made Lorde the youngest solo artist to achieve a US number-one single since 1987.

Later that year, she released her debut studio album, Pure Heroine. The record peaked atop the charts of Australia and New Zealand and charted at number three on the US Billboard 200. Its following singles include "Tennis Court", "Team", "No Better" and "Glory and Gore". In 2014, Lorde released "Yellow Flicker Beat" as a single from the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

In 2013, she was named among Time ' s most influential teenagers in the world, and in the following year, she made her way into Forbes ' s "30 Under 30" list. Her song "Royals" won two Grammy awards.
