'Power Rangers' Movie Exceeds Budgets; Lionsgate Expects a New Franchise

The movie "Power Rangers" is reported to have spent $105 million in production cost. However, Lionsgate expects that its collaboration with Saban will be able to produce another franchise for the company after "Hunger Games."

According to SF Gate, Lionsgate is in desperate need to search for another franchise movie after "Hunger Games" ended. The company expects "Power Rangers" to be its next blockbuster movie and franchise.

However, the budget to reboot the popular 1990's TV series into a box-office hits and a new franchise does not come cheap. Production cost of the movie "Power Rangers" is reported to reach $105 million, three times higher than the estimated budget. The Canadian-American film company seems to put itself in a risky situation, but according to Den of Geek, Lionsgate has to do it because it needs another box office hits to make a new franchise.

After many of its franchise films came to an end, Lionsgate need another movie that has potential to be the next "Hunger Games" or "Twilight Saga." For that reason, in 2014, Lionsgate and Saban formed a partnership to reboot "Power Rangers" from TV series to big screen.

Such breakthrough need a huge investment, especially to make the new movie became more interesting with some enhancements. At first, the estimated production cost for "Power Rangers" is estimated to be $35 million, but it grew to $105 million in actual.

"Power Rangers" is directed by Dean Israelite with a screenplay written by John Gatins. The story was developed by Kieran Mulroney and his wife Michele along with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The Rangers are portrayed by young actors and actress, namely Dacre Montgomery plays Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as Pink Rangers, while RJ Cyler, Becky G and Ludy Lin are cast as Blue, Yellow and Black Rangers.

Filming of "Power Rangers" started Feb. 29 in Vancouver until May. The movie is slated to premiere on March 24. Watch the official trailer from Lionsgate Film below:
